Trixie’s Trek with Triniti

Trixie’s Trek with Triniti is a collaboration in both print and music from Jon Vaughn and Sean Christensen. Starting from a few drawings made by Vaughn last summer, Christensen explored the series of abstract marks as a guide for a journey between two characters in which Vaughn later named Trixie and Triniti, a dog and its human friend. The two explore worlds of fragmented landscapes, rivers and architectures, taking pause to swim, read and dream. Reality and its many possible dimensions collide as both time and space morph throughout of the book, creating a kind of non-linear story that can be entered and existed at any point, yet also ‘read’ from start to finish like a traditional comic. To complete the experience the two composed a 30 minute soundtrack of synthesizer, drums and drum machines, adding musical colour to risograph printed gradients and deep blacks of the mysterious book.

The Garden Part 2: Reading Room: soft objects reconstructed from salvaged materials hosted a collection of Vancouver based artists books, multi-media, zines and publications curated by VABF. The books covered a range of topics relating to Vancouver’s Chinatown, politics, urban decay, landscape and gentrification. Attendees of the fair were invited to: Sit. Read. Stay awhile.

Moniker Press is working towards creating a community space for riso workshops, book related programming, many more studio daze. It’s been an idea/dream for so long I’m now pinching myself to check if it’s real ✨

Whether it be transporting boxes of paper, scrubbing floors, painting, donations, carrying printers down stairs or into elevators, building cabinets, book production, or mental support and brainstorming – we are so grateful and immensely appreciate the help! The Garden pt 2: at Toronto Art Book Fair Recap

Pictures of the various iterations of the modular reading room—The Garden pt 2*— that I created with Vancouver Art Book Fair for the Toronto Art Book Fair this past weekend.

Yes, I sewed about 40 weird shapey pillows and yes, it would not have been possible without the magical Lisa Curry, Sarah Davidson, Vide Press, Daniel Jefferies and the TOABF team. ✨ Sad I couldn’t be there but it was still wonderful to do a collab from afar!

RISO / COLLAGE WORKSHOP

Coinciding with the installation was a collaborative workshop organized by VABF with Quentin of Vide Press (and surprise guest, Jp from Paper Pusher!) Participants collaged photographs from Vancouver submissions into risograph layers. See the results below (photos by Lisa Curry and TOABF).

Inspiration: shapes from destroyed gardens, active gardens (such as Dr. Sun Yat-Sen), parks, back alleys, sidewalk gardens, and attic mountain views.

Including a new digital publication by VABF, interviewing Paul Wong about his practice and current project, Occupying Chinatown. Video was looped and displayed on a small screen to coincide with the installation.

Vancouver Art Book Fair and Moniker Press Present: The Garden Pt 2: a Reading Room and Collaborative Riso Workshop with Vide Press at the Toronto Art Book Fair

The Garden pt 2. is a modular reading room installation by Moniker Press. This iteration* will take place on the stage at the Toronto Art Book Fair from July 5 – 8 in collaboration with the Vancouver Art Book Fair and Vide Press.

VANCOUVER: Call for submissions deadline: June 28

WORKSHOP: **BOOKED** On Saturday July 7, 6-9pm join Quentin Mitchell of Vide Press for an interactive risograph poster making workshop as a way to connect the west coast with the east. Limited space available and currently the workshop is at full capacity, public are still welcome to observe. Workshop features an intro to risograph printing, as well as collage making techniques for analog printing. Photographic collage material will be submitted from Vancouver residents and collaged by Toronto participants to create the final poster publication. All participants will be given a copy of the final printed poster. No previous knowledge of riso or college is necessary.

When I moved to Vancouver almost 10 years ago Discorder Magazine was my go-to guide for exploring Vancouver’s art and music world (and it still is) 🖤 which is why I was so honoured (and excited) to be included in the June Issue, interviewed by Clara Dubber for the Shelf Life series. Also thanks to Editor Brit Bachmann and Evan Buggle for photographing the studio. This issue also features the calendar for Music Waste by Cole Pauls and Kirsten Hatfield.
