Was an honour to participate in Throw out your masters: Risograph printing across North America, curated by Void Gallery, which took place from May 16 to June 22, 2019 in Saskatoon. Some pictures and information below!
“Curated by Void Gallery, ‘Throw out your masters’ will showcase works from a number of Risograph studios across Canada, North America and beyond. Each studio is represented by a single work or small body of works by a professional artist associated with the studio. Void is also working with three local artists (Alani Caruso-Fitterer, Jen Schier, and Isaac Thomas) in the form of mini residencies, teaching them the methods of Risograph printing and resulting in the production of a work by each artist for the exhibition. The works by the selected professional artists (local, national, and international) will be displayed on the gallery walls, while further prints and the ephemera of Risograph materials from each studio will be displayed in a “reading room” set-up in the gallery as part of the show, available for visitors to look through. Following the exhibition, all Risograph materials will be collected into Void’s archive and made available as inspiration for members.”

Noodle Soup began as a series of mindless character drawings and recurring personal motifs in an attempt to heal from depression and substance abuse. The work evolved as outlooks began to shift more positively. Noodle Soup is a light but powerful broth, capable of taking life by the reins and simmering bitter thoughts into something truly savory.

ARTIST BIO
Harlo Martens is a trans & queer interdisciplinary artist with some formal training and zero post-secondary credentials. Their goal is to create with a strong understanding of cultural theory, philosophy, and environmental awareness. Non-human intelligence* politics are their biggest motivator. Their work has been presented in numerous comic anthologies, galleries, theatres, and VJ’d in Vancouver-based multidisciplinary art shows.

Screen Ecologies is a book which first existed as an orated text — something co-written by Emma Hicks and sophia bartholomew through the winter (Canada) summer (Australia) of 2016, and originally titled “Present, not present (or the smell that comes from the rocks before the rain).” Moving between philosophical reflection, poetic description, ink drawings, and family stories, Emma and sophia use their digitally-mediated friendship to consider broader questions around the maintenance of boundaries, social contract, healing, embodied communication, and the terms and limitations of knowledge exchange.

The light from outside travels in with you, I can see it behind you… The air might get heavy, but it’s gravity that will give you shape. Grave-digging and negative numbers. The object is being articulated by the barbecue over your left hand shoulder, behind me there’s a refrigerator…”
Published collaboratively with Moniker Press, a limited edition of Screen Ecologies was risograph printed in Vancouver, BC, 2018. Earlier versions of this work were presented at the (Popular Culture Association of Australia & New Zealand) PopCAANZ Conference Digital Ecologies panel (2016) and at “Transcultural Collaborations: Advocating Reciprocal Spaces,” a First Nations & First Peoples Artist Panel Discussion at the Sydney College of the Arts (2017).

Reminiscing those last days in Mexico, spending time with amazing people, studio visits, kiosk painting, vegan taco stands, galleries, book/general nerding 🤓 so thankful for this #mobilemoniker trip (especially now that we’re back in the cold) inspired and ready to get back to work!

2018 was quite the year! Our best-nine mostly seems to highlight activities of recent months including: several projects, yellow ink!, book fair tabling (including the Vancouver Art Book Fair in October) and moving into the new studio / production space and the launch party weekend! but we also printed and published quite a few books which we will post about soon 👽The new space was is result of several months of hard work and we are so excited to start 2019 with a full set up ✨ ready for riso workshops, a publishing residency, new print services and programming! ✨ 🌵However, to start 2019 off inspired we will be taking a little hiatus from the space from January 12 to February 17 for rrreplica in Mexico City, and to visit, work and collaborate with our friends from RRD, Kevin M Rowe and others!

Suburbanatomy is a collection written over a five-year period. Stories of obsession, power dynamics, folklore, sexuality, Stockholm syndrome, family secrets, micro cults, and the peculiarly mundane. The collaborative design of the zine, takes the reader on a journey that hints at meaning but does not spell out. Risograph printed and published by Moniker Press, this risograph book includes enough puzzles to keep readers unnerved throughout their journey.

Join us on Tuesday, December 18 for the launch of Suburbanatomy by Adi Hadzismajlovic at China Cloud Studios. Including a reading by Adi at 8 pm, accompanied by V.Vecker. Copies of Suburbanatomy will be available for purchase, and an exhibition of Lamb Hands illustrations will be on view.
ABOUT THE WRITER
Adi Hadzismajlovic is a multidisciplinary artist and writer. His work deals with the humorous, universal aspects of displacement and longing, often portrayed by characters and caricatures occupying surreal space. He is the author of an ongoing zine project Lamb Hands, as well as a booklet of poetry entitled Placenta Take Me Home and a short story collection Preaching Through a Straw. He currently resides in East Vancouver.

Moniker Press’ Studio is a book production and community space, made up of an assembly of artists who use publishing to inform their practice. The studio currently houses, Aeiou, Hayley Burns, SPIT, and soon, Blank Cheque Press. The studio was created to foster inclusive education and community around artists’ publishing and printmaking, offering opportunities for observation, practice and experimentation through the medium of printed matter.
