SLIDING SCALE
We have established a suggested sliding scale range of three prices* per workshop to accommodate different financial circumstances. We hope that offering a range of prices allows individuals to choose the level of contribution that aligns with their financial capacity while ensuring the sustainability of the workshop for future participants. Please note that there is no hierarchy between these options, you will not have to provide further details, and the choice you make will not be disclosed to anyone other than Moniker Press.

Riso Basics (101):

⊟ = $40: contributes to the workshop material costs only, for those who have financial barriers. (+$2 gst / tax)

⊡ = $60: contributes to covering both the material costs and the time invested in the workshop. (+$3 gst / tax)

⊞ = $80: contributes to the material costs, a take-away print, and the time dedicated to the workshop. For those who are able to contribute a bit more, this will help subsidize the costs for others and support Moniker Press. (+$4 gst / tax)

*Listed prices do not include 5% GST or Tixtree/processing fees which we are required to charge.

Material costs include: collage and mark making supplies (markers, pens, paper, glue etc), Riso ink and stencils, paper for printing on and any extra paper, teaching tools and supplies. Mini-worksheet takeaway.

Other costs include: MP’s time leading the workshop as well as prep for it, studio rent and other maintenance costs that keep MP running, as well as costs for subsidized workshop participants.

TixTree fees: TixTree fee is 0.80 per sign up, which in part goes to support their tree planting efforts you can read more about it here: tixtree.com/company/activism/

Processing fees: both PayPal and Stripe take a cut of the fees for processing the payments, this is added as 2.9% to the final payment (Moniker Press covers the rest + 0.30).

SUBSIDIZED WORKSHOPS
Moniker Press is committed to removing barriers and ensuring that Risograph Basics 101 is equitable / accessible, regardless of one’s ability to pay. If you are unable to afford the sliding scale fee for the workshop, you can sign up for the waitlist with no questions asked. In the event that a participant drops out or a workshop is not at full capacity, we will reach out to individuals on the waitlist starting from the top. Please note that it may take some time to work through the list, but we are committed to ensuring that as many people as possible have the opportunity to participate in the workshop. WAITLIST FORM Another non-monetary way to access workshops is through Volunteering / time exchange. You can read more on the Volunteer page.
WHO LEADS THE WORKSHOPS?
Workshops are led by Erica (owner/operator/printer/publisher) who began Moniker Press in 2014 as a publishing project and print-for-hire shop. The Moniker Press studio was created to foster inclusive education and community around artists’ publishing and printmaking, offering opportunities for observation, practice and experimentation through the medium of printed matter. Read more about Moniker Press on our About page.

WHAT TO EXPECT?
Here’s a run down on the schedule for the Riso Basic 101 workshops:

① To get to know each other a little bit, at the start of the workshop we’ll go through short introductions (name, pronouns, and favourite riso colour) and an Access Check-in. (approx: 20-30min)

② Next there will be a short talk and introduction to riso printing, the machine technology and an explanation of how we will be creating our analog stencil originals. (lots of time for questions) (approx: 30-40min)

③ Time to create your originals using the provided materials (we’ve got markers, pencils, glue, scissors, collage materials etc.) we’ll listen to some music and get in the art-making zone. (approx: 45min – 1 hour)

④ The printing demo, trimming of the postcards and print exchange! (approx: 20-30min)

WHAT TO BRING?
Riso Basics 101: nothing required! Optional to bring your own mark making materials (pens/pencils/markers) or scannable collage materials that you would like to use for your postcard print.

Phone/Camera: photos and videos are welcome, please tag @MonikerPress :)

Show and tell: if you have something that’s Riso or just cool that you want to show/bring for inspiration it’s more than welcome.

Sustenance: Up to you, consider if you may want hydration or snacks (careful consumption of non-greasy food and drink is allowed– as long as it’s not too close to paper or books). If you have severe allergies please inform us beforehand so we can let other participants know in advance. We have water available in the studio.

WHAT TO WEAR?
Anything you like! Please wear a mask and comfy closed-toed shoes for studio safety. Since the studio is in the basement it can be cooler in the winter so an extra layer might be needed.

WORKSHOP LOCATION
101: in the Moniker Press studio (268 Keefer St), please see the location page for directions.

INK COLOURS
The ink colours for workshops will be pre-determined. In an effort to reduce stencil waste/costs per workshop we’ve combined printing into postcards, which also gives the opportunity for a fun print exchange at the end! When you register you’ll be able to vote on the final 2 colour choices between a cool: Medium Blue, Cornflower, Green or Teal and a warm ink: Bright Red, Fl Pink, Orchid or Fl Orange.

ACCESSIBILITY
When registering please let Moniker Press know if you have any Access Needs. Keep in mind, print shops in general tend to be loud, smell-filled, noisy and bright environments. There may be music playing, overlapping with talking and printer machine noise. We can provide earplugs if needed and welcome the use of personal noise-cancelling headphones, ear muffs, etc. We have some stools and chairs for sitting, fatigue mat for the floor if needed, and suggest wearing comfortable footwear. Workshops are currently in English and audio/spoken communication reliant.

Physical space: The Moniker Press studio has a lot of stuff and equipment in it but we will do our best before each workshop to clear enough space for each participant to navigate it safely and comfortably.

Sun Wah Building: we’ve created directions with images that can be found here. There is an elevator to get to floor LG, before which there is a two-step staircase with railings or a ramp with one railing. Washrooms are gender neutral and there is an accessible washroom on the LG floor.

Online: As of right now, we will be using Google Meet for automatic closed-captioning, unfortunately we do not yet have resources to provide ASL interpretation. (side note: if any translators would like to volunteer for a session let us know, in exchange for a free workshop or Riso printing)

What’s an Access check-in? MP is still learning about Access check-ins but aims to emulate Curiosity Paradox’s practice of Access Check-Ins for our workshops.

An Access Check In asks, “what do you need (or want) the group to know for you to participate?” It might also be an opportunity to respond to the questions, “how are you feeling and what do you need?” or “why are you here and what do you need?” or “what do you hope to learn and what do you need?” During an Access Check In, a person might realize they need water. It is ok to stop the Access Check In for an access need to get met. Access Check Ins can be an agenda item that interrupts ableism, they may also interrupt an agenda.

COVID SAFETY
Please do not come to the studio if you are experiencing symptoms or have tested positive. Moniker Press still follows Yarrow Society’s recommendations to continue to wear masks in Chinatown and DTES as care for the community. If you forget or are unable to wear a mask, let us know. (masks can be provided when needed)
