FINISHING

FINISHING
FOLDING / COLLATING

All folding and collating is done by hand in studio. With some good tunes and snacks on standby, repetitive tasks are our forte. Bonus points if you suggest a cool podcast/tunes for us to listen to. ☺  Talk to us about custom scoring and folding- flyers, greeting cards, envelopes, brochures, covers, one page zines etc!

TRIMMING

This is the last step in the post-printing process to make sure your zine or print has that professional edge. Moniker has full cut/trim capabilities in house with our Challenge stack cutter! All measurements for paper, cuts, score and fold marks should be in inches (thanks USA). Rounded measurements are required as our cutter is very old and can’t easily align to something that’s for example: “10.36959” but an even 10.5″ or 10.25″ is great!

BINDING

Moniker can facilitate most types of binding for your project.

SADDLE STITCH - STAPLE
A classic for zines and booklets, this style of binding is simple and low cost. The paper is folded and stapled down the middle. We have a variety of colour and standard staples in stock. Saddle stitch works best on booklets that range from 8–40 pages. Our stapler can handle a maximum of 10-20 sheets thick depending on the paper. Remember that the page amount must be divisible by four!

Common page counts: 8, 16, 24, 32
Common uses: zines, art books, booklets

SPIRAL / COMB
Spiral binding is great solution if you want the pages in your project to lie flat. It’s a durable binding that uses a plastic coil spiralled through a series of punched holes.

Typically we use 12” 4:1 coils with our machine, that can be trimmed to your project size. Coils come in multiple sizes to accommodate a wide range of page counts, recommended for projects that are 8+ pages.

We sometimes have limited colours in stock (black, white, clear), but most of the time coils are ordered on an as-needed basis. There are many cool colour options (fluorescents, pastels, glow in the dark!) that bring this binding style beyond the office aesthetic. We have colour samples available at the studio.

Common uses: calendars, zines, notebooks, booklets, larger book projects.

PERFECT BOUND - GLUE
With this technique pages are glued along the spine—think typical paperback novel.  We have a working perfect bind machine in the studio, and can accommodate most orders depending on their edition size/specifications, please enquire for more info.

Perfect binding works best for books with higher page counts so that the spine is not too thin (which can cause rounding / errors in the glue / the appearance of creases etc). Books with less than 25 sheets (approx 50-60 pages*) are not recommended as they are too thin for glue binding (try looking at saddle-stitch instead!). The maximum height of spine that can fit in the machine is approximately 1/2″ (approximately 100+ sheets*). The max spin length for our machine is 10″.  *note: page numbers are approximate because paper choice can also play a factor in the final thickness of a spine.

Common uses: limited edition zines, art books, paperbacks, comic books.
