MONIKER PRESS MOVE!

Moniker Press is working towards creating a community space for riso workshops, book related programming, many more studio daze. It’s been an idea/dream for so long I’m now pinching myself to check if it’s real ✨

Whether it be transporting boxes of paper, scrubbing floors, painting, donations, carrying printers down stairs or into elevators, building cabinets, book production, or mental support and brainstorming – we are so grateful and immensely appreciate the help! As well as for the opportunity to collaborate and spent time with so many amazing people—artists, writers, designers, friends, volunteers and family! Thank you thank you thank you 💜

When I moved to Vancouver almost 10 years ago Discorder Magazine was my go-to guide for exploring Vancouver’s art and music world (and it still is) 🖤 which is why I was so honoured (and excited) to be included in the June Issue, interviewed by Clara Dubber for the Shelf Life series. Also thanks to Editor Brit Bachmann and Evan Buggle for photographing the studio. This issue also features the calendar for Music Waste by Cole Pauls and Kirsten Hatfield.

 🖤Thanks Discorder! 🖤

In January, videographer, Camille Vernet, visited the Moniker Press studio to document our printing and publishing process for the web series Inspired BC. Was a pleasure to work with Camille and below is the resulting video! Also thank you to our collaborator, Sylvana d’Angelo, of Zine Club for making an appearance.

Inspired BC is a web series by Camille Vernet about artists in Vancouver. The aim of the series is to highlight local artists and their work, inspirations and place in the community.

Directed, filmed and edited by Camille Vernet
Sound recording and mixing by Francis Paris
Music by Ricardo Ochoa
Additional footage by Erica Wilk for ‘Making of the Duality Book
and additional interview with Sylvana d’Angelo, Designer

See full list of featured publications and projects, printed and published by Moniker Press at the end of the video. Thank you: Anna Niskenen, Graham McFie, Ana Reyes, Giselle Bourget and Melissa Luk for volunteering at Moniker Press to make these publications possible.

I used this quote in a presentation once – it still resonates…

“The book itself is a curious artefact, not showy in its technology but complex and extremely efficient: a really neat little device, compact, often very pleasant to look at and handle, that can last decades, even centuries. It doesn’t have to be plugged in, activated, or performed by a machine; all it needs is light, a human eye, and a human mind. It is not one of a kind, and it is not ephemeral. It lasts. It is reliable. If a book told you something when you were 15, it will tell it to you again when you’re 50, though you may understand it so differently that it seems you’re reading a whole new book.”

—Ursula le Guin (Staying Awake: Notes on the alleged decline of reading,
Harper’s Magazine, February 2008.)

 Rest easy.

After an unexpected slow start to the year (thanks to everyone for their patience etc) I’m excited to announce… Moniker Press’ first open studio day!

Drop by on March 11th to learn about the inner workings of the Moniker Press risograph print shop! At the open studio, you’re invited to: pick up a copy of the “Intro to Riso” zine, see the RZ and MZ printers in person, view print samples from the archive and meet others who are interested in risograph printing.

A selection of riso books collected in Mexico City at RRReplica (as well as others from the Reading Nook) will be on display for browsing / inspiration.

Important note: this event is not a workshop (although we hope to have workshops available later this year). Feel free to ask basic questions about the print process but for more in-depth discussions regarding projects, pricing, and file set up you must schedule an individual meeting at a later date. Email erica@monikerpress.ca if you have a project in mind!
