BIO

Cole Pauls is a Champagne and Aishihik Citizen and Tahltan comic artist, illustrator, and printmaker hailing from Haines Junction (Yukon Territory). He holds a BFA in Illustration from Emily Carr University. Residing in Vancouver, Pauls has created three graphic novels: Dakwäkãda Warriors (2019), Pizza Punks (2021) and Kwändür (2022). In 2017, Pauls won Broken Pencil Magazine’s Best Comic and Best Zine of the Year Award for Dakwäkãda Warriors II. In 2020, Dakwäkãda Warriors won Best Work in an Indigenous Language from the Indigenous Voices Awards and was nominated for the Doug Wright Award categories The Egghead & The Nipper. In 2022, Artspeak gallery, Vancouver, held the first solo exhibition of Pauls’ work, Dazhän Kwändür ch’e (This is a Story). In 2023, Kwändür won the Roderick Haig-Brown Regional Prize from the BC & Yukon Book Prize.

ARTIST BIO

SVAVA TERGESEN (b. 1993, Vancouver, BC) is an interdisciplinary artist living and working the unceded territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish) and səl̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) peoples, also known as Vancouver, BC. Combining photography with sculpture and textiles, Tergesen’s work reimagines everyday experiences of domesticity, gender and health. Recent solo exhibitions include Ornamental Cookery, Audain Art Museum, Whistler (2023) and Garnished Sundries, Telephone Gallery, Vancouver, BC (2022). She has participated in residencies at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity and Duplex Artist Society, and her work has been nominated for the New Generation Photography Award (2021) and the Lind Prize (2020). Tergesen holds a BFA in Photography from Emily Carr University of Art & Design (2020).

ARTIST BIO

Heather Tsang is a graphic artist and designer residing on the unceded and ancestral territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations. She holds a BDes in Interaction Design from Emily Carr University of Art + Design (2013) and is one sixth of the newly formed zine collective happen stance who exhibited at vanCAF 2023 and WORD Vancouver 2023. 

As a second-generation Canadian, first-generation American, and a member of the Chinese diaspora, comfort and subversion of identity are themes she notices appearing and reappearing in her work. Other topics of interest include embodiment and ethics.

ARTIST BIO:

harlo martens does comics, animation, and regular art on the unceded traditional territories of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh people. in 2018 they became a member of the “vancouver”-based animation collective flavourcel. they never finished art school and currently work full time in veterinary admin to make ends meet. in 1997 they were born during the rise of the red river (manitoba) with german and french settler ancestry. they have a dream of one day creating a hologram.

ARTIST BIOS

Alex Mah is an interdisciplinary artist, composer-musician, and performer in dance. He lives and practices on the unceded ancestral territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. His electroacoustic music investigates time and timbre and his written music explores embodied concepts such as chance, choice, and relationality in performance. He has performed in Canada, the U.S., and Germany and holds a BFA from SFU (Canada) and an MRes from Bath Spa University (U.K.).

Ilana Waniuk is a violinist with interests ranging from improvisation to visual arts.  She is a founding member and co-artistic director of Tkarón:to – based contemporary/experimental music ensemble and presenting organization Thin Edge New Music Collective and Balancing on the Edge (multidisciplinary production company merging contemporary music and circus arts). Most recently, she is the curator/performer behind ‘Filaments’, an evolving concert program dedicated to collaboratively co-creating interdisciplinary works for violin, electronics and multimedia. Ilana divides her time between Tkarón:to – traditional territory of the Anishinaabe, the Mississaugas of the Credit; the Haudenosaunee; and the Wendat peoples- and San Diego where she is a grateful guest on the lands of the Ipai-Tipai Kumeyaay Nation. Ilana is currently a doctoral candidate in contemporary performance at the University of California San Diego.

Nunca há Nada | There Is Never Nothing, Luciana Freire D’Anunciação

 

Nunca há Nada é uma coleção de poemas que vê a performatividade da linguagem poética como um potencial para expandir a prática em performance art e dança da autora. Tais práticas são baseadas na técnica de improvisação que presta atenção nos mínimos eventos que existem na contínua troca de estímulos entre o mundo interno e externo em tempo presente. A poesia aqui funciona como meio para documentar criativamente performances que ela fez ou observou — e depois escolheu julgá-las como tal. A maioria dos poemas foram escritos durante o segundo ano da pandemia. Alguns ela escreveu primeiramente em inglês, outros em português, alguns no Canadá, outros no Brasil. Depois, traduziu abraçando as estranhezas que existem no abismos entre as duas línguas e as impossíveis traduções literais. O que também reflete sua própria condição de imigrante Brasileira vivendo no Canadá, que concilia duas línguas, duas culturas, duas disciplinas artísticas (poesia e performance), além de nunca parar de fazer questionamentos sobre identidade e pertencimento.

ARTIST BIO

Luciana Freire D’Anunciação is a Brazilian artist who has worked and lived between Brazil and Canada for the past 14 years. She is a performance artist who develops interdisciplinary projects with dance, theatre, video, photography, installation, sound and text, which have been presented in performing arts festivals, film festivals, art galleries and multidisciplinary events in many countries across the Americas and Europe. She holds an MFA in Interdisciplinary Studies from Simon Fraser University and is in continuous training in many dance practices; she teaches dance/performance classes and workshops as community engagement.

Luciana Freire D’Anunciação é artista brasileira que vive e trabalha entre o Brasil e o Canadá há 14 anos. Ela é artista da performance que desenvolve projetos interdisciplinares com a dança, teatro, vídeo, fotografia, instalação, som e texto, os quais já foram apresentados em festivais de dança, teatro, cinema, galerias e eventos multidisciplinares em vários países das Américas e Europa. É mestra em Estudos Interdisciplinares em Artes pela Simon Fraser University (Vancouver, Canadá), está em contínuo treinamento em diversas práticas da dança, além de ministrar aulas e workshops para membros da comunidade local de Vancouver.

Asami Watanabe is a Japanese illustrator based in Vancouver, where she creates whimsical digital illustrations.
